Bill reports that a fellow sentry, Norvis — who had shot and killed a workman at Kauha Island in an earlier incident — was himself attacked and knocked unconscious in an apparent act of revenge, and separately describes helping apply a tourniquet at the scene of a serious car crash involving several sailors. Note: This letter directly corroborates and cross-references the July 1940 shooting letters elsewhere in this collection — the workman Norvis (elsewhere spelled Norris) shot and killed at Kuahua/Kauha/Magazine Island, described in the July 20, 28, and 29, 1940 letters. Here Bill reports Norvis himself was attacked two months later by an unidentified assailant Bill twice calls “gook,” a period ethnic slur transcribed exactly as written, in what he describes as “probably a form of revenge for the killing.” This letter is accompanied by a full typed transcript, appended to the end of this scan, for ease of reading.
