Description:

Bill awaits results of a competitive PFC examination, mentions the new Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, and describes viewing the submarine that collided with a carrier in the harbor. Accompanied by a full typed transcript for ease of reading.

Additional Notes

Note: By September 1940 Frank Knox had recently become Secretary of the Navy, succeeding Charles Edison, whom Bill photographed at Pearl Harbor in an April 1940 letter in this collection — Knox is very likely the “Secretary of the Navy” Bill refers to here as aboard the flagship at the time of the submarine collision. “Col. Knox,” inspecting Bill’s quarters, appears to be a separate, unidentified officer sharing the same surname. The P.F.C. examination follows up on the Aug. 29, 1940 letter in this collection, and “Bud Farris” returns from the same rifle range described in the Aug. 19–27, 1940 letters. This letter is accompanied by a full typed transcript, appended to the end of this scan, for ease of reading.
