Description:

PVT Lindsey L. Hill, USMC, bends over a packed duffel bag on a sunlit porch or barracks room, arranging its contents. He wears a light-colored short-sleeved shirt and trousers; window sashes and a porch railing are visible behind him. The print is heavily overexposed by direct sunlight. William Stinson Brown wrote of PVT Hill, “Fired from gate for misconduct.”

Additional Notes

This photograph is from the personal collection of photographs taken by CPL William Stinson Brown while stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii before the infamous attack of 7 December 1941. CPL Brown was there during the attack. These unique photographs were donated to the COGG Honor Archive for public use of students, writers and researchers of history. The generous donation was from CPL William S Brown’s, son, William Stinson “Bill” Brown Jr. and his loving granddaughter Caitlin Brown Clancy. PVT Lindsey L. Hill also appears in the May 1940 “Main Gate Guard, Pearl Harbor Navy Yard” group portrait in this collection. Note on this record’s attachment: the original scan uploaded to Airtable was a TIFF (.tif) file, which does not render on the COGG website. A JPEG copy was substituted here for web display so the image appears correctly on the live site; the original high-resolution TIFF file remains available in Airtable’s file history. For best image quality, consider re-scanning or re-exporting a full-resolution JPEG of the original and replacing this attachment when convenient.
