Photograph of CPL Lyman R. “Pop” Malone, nicknamed “The Old Man” by CPL William Stinson Brown, seated at a desk typing in the sergeants’ quarters at the Marine Barracks, Pearl Harbor Navy Yard. He wears a service uniform with tie; a stack of books and a small framed portrait photograph sit on the desk beside the typewriter. In the background are a wall-mounted washbasin, medicine cabinet, a mosquito-netted bunk with a pith helmet on the pillow, and a calendar advertising a Honolulu shipping, sugar, pineapple, and insurance firm, dated April 1941. William Brown captioned the back of this photograph “The old man.” 1941.

This photograph is from the personal collection of photographs taken by CPL William Stinson Brown while stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii before the infamous attack of 7 December 1941. CPL Brown was there during the attack. These unique photographs were donated to the COGG Honor Archive for public use of students, writers and researchers of history. The generous donation was from CPL William S Brown’s, son, William Stinson “Bill” Brown Jr. and his loving granddaughter Caitlin Brown Clancy. Handwritten caption on verso, in CPL Brown’s hand: “The old man” (referring to CPL Lyman R. “Pop” Malone).
