Note: The light cruiser Bill names here, the U.S.S. Cincinnati, was a real Omaha-class cruiser based in the Pacific in this period; the ammunition convoy and sealed sailing orders he describes reflect the escalating pre-war logistics buildup traced across these late-1940 letters. Waldron’s and Williamson’s promotions, and the corporal’s exam Bill is himself awaiting results on, are followed up in the Dec. 9, 1940 letter in this collection.
